Nacala-a-Velha is a rapidly expanding town located in northern Mozambique. A new deep-water mineral port resulted in cataclysmic growth flooding the area with a significant influx of people seeking economic opportunities.

A high-level urban design framework was commissioned by VALE, the Brazilian mining concessionary, to manage the proposed expansion. The framework researched historic development patterns, environmental constraints and proposed growth models to facilitate the spatial restructuring of the town.
